"Coastal" - a Collection of Original Watercolor Seascapes inspired by Northern California

COASTAL

a collection of original watercolor seascapes inspired by Northern california

In October 2022, my boys and I went on a quick trip to San Fransisco. I wanted to share Northern California with them, a place they had never been. There's nothing better than a relaxing road trip up the coastline of Northern California from Santa Cruz to San Fransisco.

The landscape along the coast was so different than Southern California. There were hardly any homes dotting the shore, in fact, most of the land was small organic farms. I’m still upset with myself for not stopping to buy local honey and 7 avocados for $1! I kept thinking that all of these vegetables had some of the prettiest ocean front property.

I was amazed at the rolling fog, the craggy rocks with sea stars and foliage, and watching the tree line change from palm trees to towering Redwoods.

Our first stop on our road trip was to Shark Fin Cove, just north of Santa Cruz. I'd call it a bit of a local's secret that was quite treacherous to get to. Parking along side the Cabrilllo highway and venturing down a slippery, steep cliff to get to a magnificent little secret beach with caves and a huge cliff the shape of a shark fin in the middle of the sea's coastline.

I was amazed with the way the tide moved around the rocks and the dance of the waves along the coastline and back into the ocean. The rapidly moving fog was glorious.

Our next stop was to Pigeon Point Lighthouse where we spent at least an hour exploring all the craggy rocks and sea creatures. It wasn't until later that we discovered a dead and decomposing seal on the shoreline and realized what the smell in the salty air was.

We found so many beautiful treasures, including crab shells, sea stars, and marine wildlife.

I created two paintings inspired by this place. One of the shoreline, called Whalers Cove, and another of the colourful vegetation growing at the foot of the lighthouse.

We left with a joy that only the excitement that only comes from exploring new places.

I just couldn’t leave out the beautiful golden hour glow on the coast of Big Sur. I’ve been asked by multiple people to create a horizontal painting of Big Sur for quite awhile.

I fell in love with painting the colours reflecting in the ocean, and warm sunset glow. It feels really special. Special, just like the magic felt at sunset on the coast of California.

There's nothing quite like the warm light at sunset reflecting off the ocean. Reflecting all of the colours of the rainbow in its waters. The feeling of the cool, ocean breeze and the warm light felt on your face as the sun turns to rose just before it sinks below the sea.

Each of these pieces were painted slowly and restfully, through the meditation of vacation. Each painting emerged layer by washy layer.

Each painting comes signed and varnished,  with the option of framing. Each frame is made from sustainably sourced, solid oak wood, with a white archival mat, and durable plexiglass.

Each original painting is a witness of the hand of the artist and the unique way I see the world. A piece that carefully shows every detail, brush stroke, touch and trace left behind by the artists’ hands. Not to mention those beautiful deckled edges!

Each of these intimate paintings have been carefully scanned, colour corrected, and reproduced into beautiful large scale prints of the highest quality. I purposely kept the texture of the original paintings in tact to express the looseness of each painting and the feeling of the beach. I'm so happy with the way they turned out!

Each of these prints are reproduced on beautiful, thick cotton watercolor paper, to look and feel just like original watercolour paintings.
