2022 Year in Review
In 2022 I implemented some structures around my creative practice and the way I released original artwork and prints, and for the most part, it was really successful for my creative workflow. I painted less than ever before, in a more strategic way that allowed me to focus on my print studio and the increasing demand for my work, which I am SO grateful for!
I started the year off sick in bed, like most of the world gathering inspiration. It immediately threw me off my established routine, but allowed me some time to focus and gather inspiration for new work I wanted to create in 2022. I set out to paint all of the famous places in Alberta this year, and for the most part, I think I accomplished my goal. I have a few more places up my sleeve.
An unexpected trip to Southern California in late January fully invigorated and inspired me to get back to the work of creating. Rest, much needed sunshine, and ocean air filled me with so much gratitude and the need to create some beautiful magic. I came home and immediately painted the beach.
In total I created 6 original larger watercolour landscape paintings, 4 autumnal watercolour paintings for the square foot show, and 7 original oil paintings. I also released a small collection of 7 mini, framed watercolour paintings inspired by the beach. I actually broke my own rule of ditching collections in 2022, but after a long break, I felt ready to create and release work this way again.
My work mainly focussed on prints this year. I learned how to create high quality prints from my originals and I added 28 new prints to my website this year! I sold my work in some of the best local retail shops that allowed my income to become more consistent and predictable. It created a much needed change in the sustainability of my artistic career.
I participated in more markets this year than I ever have in years past. I had a goal to be more involved in the local community this year, and was grateful for your support. In October, I participated in the Etsy Calgary market, and a local pop up at West Elm Calgary which were both new experiences for me. I participated in the Kananaskis Christmas Market for the third time in November, and was overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of everyone who came to support local vendors. This was the busiest and most profitable market I have participated in yet! I also participated in the Peak to Prairie market in Calgary in December and was grateful for the response to my work. This introverted artist has finally found a way of sharing and talking about my work in person, which feels exciting.
For this year’s holiday gift shop I created a small collection of ceramic ornaments painted in gouache which were also available as custom preorders. I released five beautifully curated print bundles available at a discounted price. I chose not to offer a collection of birch paintings this year, but was asked to offer them as custom preorders as well. Your support over the holiday season is so heartwarming to me and my family, and allows me the flexibility to take care of our needs during the slower seasons of the coming year. I can’t express how truly grateful we are.
I have a few new ideas on how I would like to focus my energy moving into 2023. I think freedom is the main gift I would like to provide myself and my creative practice, which I’ll share more of in January.
